Movie Crush Monday: CT & Pitch Perfect

Welcome back, dear readers! We're super sorry about the delay. We took a week off to reformat the blog, clean up the look a little, and introduce something totally new! Starting this week, on Saturday we'll have a weekly roundup of sorts. A "what do you guys do when you're not ranting about TV on the internet". A "what's happening in the nerd-sphere" or at least "what's happening in your corner of the nerd-sphere". A place for us to share more with you about our writing projects, or what we're reading lately, or what the F happened this week on [fill in show we're obsessed with here]. Keep an eye out for that this weekend!

Now on to our Movie Crush of the week. I've had a little extra time to think about this, and you better believe that I spent that time binging old episodes of The Office and not thinking about this at all. Procrastination for life, y'all. But once I actually sat down to look at Hamlet 2 and what options it gave me, the choice was immediately clear.

That's right, friends. We're going to talk a little Pitch Perfect for ya here this week (following professional adorable guy, Skylar Astin). Disclaimers out of the way first. Did this movie have some plot/structure/character problems? Sure did. Did this movie brings some traumatic memories of high school a cappella groups screaming back to me? Sure did. But do I have one hell of a good time watching it every single time? Darn straight.

First of all, I would watch Anna Kendrick do just about anything. Starting with her premiere in Camp (2003), she has charmed me to death in every single role. She is always funny and relatable, but also interesting and often surprising in her acting choices. Becca is no different. This character gives Kendrick the room to be the straight woman in a scene, and the sassy/hilarious one a second later. The rest of the cast is just as funny. From Adam Devine to Rebel Wilson to Elizabeth Banks- they're all outstanding here.

But let's just take one moment to appreciate what this film does exceptionally well- it captures the weirdness and wonderfulness and magic of female friendships. And not in a "everybody braid each others hair and talk about unicorns" way. It does it while letting the young women in this story be complicated and difficult and often angry. Their friendships exist in their faults as much as they do in their awesomeness. And that's always going to be crush-worthy.

Happy Watching!
