Movie Crush Monday:Little C and Hamlet 2

Happy Monday readers!to Last week CT wrote about the quirky comedy Ruby Sparks. And thus she has armed me with Steve Coogan who I adore and I would happily spend hours watching him and Rob Brydon do their Michael Caine imitations. Today, though, I wanted to talk about one of the first times I saw Steve in action. Today let's talk about Hamlet 2.

The story behind Hamlet 2 is that a failed actor turned high school drama teacher decided to put on a highly inappropriate musical sequel to the play Hamlet. Except he's such a mess that everything quickly gets out of hand. The kids parents object to the racy material and the school refuses to let the performance happen in the auditorium. But neither of these problems are as bad as the train wreck that is the life of drama teacher Dana Marschz.

As with a lot of comedies, the plot is not really the point. The characters are all flawed and problematic but none are as off the wall and weird as Mr. Marschz. He's got a foul mouth and a terrible temper and absolutely no accurate sense of boundaries. The play comes together largely in spite of him, and the students have to work around him several times. But he's just so charming, and clueless that he comes across less obnoxious and more dopey.

The first hour of the movie is basically a big set up for the actual production of Hamlet 2. There are times in movies like this that the set up is so over the top that the execution just lets you down. This is not one of them. The last 20 minutes are dazzling, and weird and filled with surprisingly catchy tunes.

Signing off for now, I will see you guys on Wednesday.

Happy watching,
Little C
