Little C: Look at the Pretty Costumes

Readers, there something we should discuss. I love clothes. I wear almost the exact same thing every single day (jeans and a t-shirt) but I also love to look at runway shows and fashion collections. And I love to notice the clothes in movies and TV shows. I think that there's a really magical element that the right costumes can add to a story. I'm always a huge fan of anything involving Colleen Atwood who does most of Tim Burton's films and just won another Oscar for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. But the costumes on TV shows usually get a lot less notice. Sometimes it's because they are so weird that noticing them takes away from the show a little (*cough Gilmore Girls cough*) but also they mostly are just used to make characters fade into the fabric of the world. But on rare occasions there's a show that nails the costumes so perfectly that they tell a whole story of their own.

Like in Mad Men where the colors and even the cuts of the suits where used to help convey the shift in dynamics and power between Don Draper and his fellow advertising executives. The women's costumes are used to help give visual cues about their emotional state and their relationships. I was never a huge fan of Mad Men, but the costume work on that show was exquisite.

Or for a more modern example, The Crown that just premiered on Netflix had some incredible costume work. Everything from the color and patterns that characters wear to the number of srands of pearls that the women sport gives details that the script does not. When examined on their own, the outfits go from a detail to an integral part of the story.

But what we're really here to talk about is a favorite obsession of ours. When the BBC put together The Musketeers they assembled some stupid talented costumers. And it seems like they just kept increasing the budget for that department each season. By the time you get to the last few episodes (which we are currently watching) the coats alone have me drooling all over the floor like an idiot. They have assembled some of the most attractive cast that has ever graced a television screen and then draped them in some of the best costumes I've ever laid eyes on. This is the level of attention and detail that turns me instantly into the biggest fangirl the world has ever seen.

LOOK AT THE LEATHER WORK AFJKHFEOISUFJFFHSDKFH. Sorry. Pulling it together. But not really because if you will note the main four Musketeers are all wearing tunics that reflect not only their backstories but also their personality and Anne is almost always in blue or gold to signify her royal status but also to show her connection to the Musketeers and if you'll forgive me I'm about to disappear down a rabbit hole of fabric patterns and ruffles.

Look for the costumes,
Little C
