Oh boy y'all, I can barely contain my excitement about this one. Regular readers will know that these two nerds have been fans of Supernatural since we were in high school (yes it's been on that long and it just got picked up for Season 14) and this week they released their latest in crazy wacky episodes. My favorite part of this show is that at least once a year they find a way to do something completely crazy and nine times out of ten they manage to pull it off. They've had episodes where they fought imaginary friends, or got stuck in a Grey's Anatomy style medical show. They've gotten stuck with a rabbits foot that tries to kill Sam, and dealt with a time-loop that does kill Dean over and over. This world is dark most of the time and whenever the writers know that they are going to take a beloved character away from us *cough*CharlieKevinBobby*cough* they prime the audience with a fun episode so that we don't give up out of depression. It's an effective formula, and this year they very much outdid themselves. Because they pulled off a mash-up with Scooby freakin Doo.

Oh, Supernatural. Never change |
Spoiler alert for the episode is now in effect. This episode starts with the boys fighting and subsequently torching a giant stuffed dinosaur. From there it only gets crazier as the boys get pulled in to a haunted TV (just roll with it) and wind up in a Scooby Doo episode. I've rewatched this four times in the last five days because the first time through I didn't actually absorb any of it because I was too busy rolling in nerdy joy. This episode doesn't advance the story of the show at all (which makes sense because they had to record the voices for this over a year ago in order to get the animation done) but it does give the fans a lot to giggle over. You don't get thirteen seasons in to a show without learning what your fans really want.

Anyhoo the boys end up chasing a real ghost with the Scooby gang which sends them all in into a deep existential meltdowns. Fred is pissed that they could have been hunting real ghosts, Shaggy and Scooby have all their worst fears validated, Velma feels like a fraud, and Daphne wonders out loud if she's going to Hell... prompting my biggest question of the night. What did you DO DAPHNE? The boys manage to figure out the ghost is a scared kid (because the writers can't resist the opportunity to insert a scary ghost child) and then they manage to convince the Scooby gang that the haunting was just another fake. It means that we get the joy of seeing everyone's reactions to the supernatural reveal but also the boys get to return to the real world without ruining their childhood favorite show. The episode ends with Dean getting to mug directly into the camera. It's truly delightful.
Scooby Dooby Doo!
