Little C: Pretty Please, Marvel

Guys... I don't want to oversell this, but I'm also incapable of not being over dramatic right now. MARVEL ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE ORDERING A SCRIPT FOR A BLACK WIDOW MOVIE!!!! Everything is sunshine and rainbows and puppies and I am filled with love for all humanity!

...

Okay even for me that last part went a little far. But it's true, they have hired writer Jac Schaeffer who's fairly new to the business but has already sold a script through the Black List so we know she's talented, to write a spec script on a solo Black Widow movie. This does not mean that the movie will actually get made, because the entertainment industry is a post apocalyptic hellscape of potential hangups for any project, but it is a major step. Also, in the very unlikely chance that Kevin Feige is reading this, Please please please please give it to us! We deserve this nice thing! Please!

This announcement speaks to something that we here at 908 South have been saying for many moons. The fatigue that's being felt with the comic book genre is not an over-saturation of super hero movies. It is an over-saturation of movies where the hero is a white guy. Or multiple white guys. Or multiple white guys and one token woman or person of color. That seems to be the mode that the major studios find to be the safest. But Black Panther is pre-selling better than any of the previous Marvel Movies. Wonder Woman is the only part of the DC film verse that hasn't been bad and or boarderline bad. We as nerds do not need a wash of anti-heros or gritty reboots to franchises we already have. We need some damn representation for the girls and the people of color.

There's a feeling in Hollywood right now. The effect of the recent political and social scandals that have rocked the news lately is going to take a little while to really be felt or noticed on screens, but what I hope the result will be is diversity in film and TV. Not just on screen, but in the writers rooms and on the crews. It's going to be a long process of changing how the people in studios and at networks think about the content that they make, but when it happens what we can all look forward to is a wealth of new stories. Stories that challenge us and force us to consider the world from a new perspective. Stories that give us a hard shove outside our comfort zones. Stories that change us, and help us tackle the challenges we are facing as a society.

So yes, I will be nerding out over the barest glimpse of a potential of a Marvel movie that focuses on Black Widow. And I will watch the shit out of Black Panther in theaters (probably 9 or 10 times because I love me a repeat viewing). And I hope even if they aren't your favorite characters, you will to. Because this industry pays attention when people vote with their time and money, and the more they think they can get out of trying new things, the easier it will be for that big change to come.
