Little C: Humans

Hey there, readers. The news in general has been pretty terrifying and sad for the last few days, so I thought I'd talk to you about a TV I love that's coming back next month. We're big fans of British TV in our household. Not just the regulars like Dr. Who and Broadchurch, either. We watch the sitcoms and the panel shows. Their programming is just consistently more fun than a lot of the American counterparts. Which I couldn't stop thinking about last week as I finally caught up with Westworld. Don't get me wrong, Westworld has scale and a budget that allows it to do bigger harder things and it was really cool. But when the BBC made a show about androids that blur the line between robot and humanity, I found the results much more intriguing.

The basic idea of the show is that androids called synths have been invented and accepted into everyday life. They have a limited span, usually a few years before they need to be replaced, and humans have started using them to take care of all the thing they don't want to do. There are synths that pick food and do farm tasks. There are synths that take care of the elderly or sick. There are synths that stay in houses with families and do all of the cooking and cleaning. They also take care of the children, raising the question of what does a kid look like who's being raised by a machine?

This show addresses questions that I've never seen in scifi before. If robots can be programmed to do any job, what would teenagers have left as career options? If a synth is the only link a man with dementia has to his pas and memoriest, is is ethical to make him replace it with one that can better care for him? If a married person has sex with a synth, is it cheating? Can you program a synth to believe in God?

I flew through the first season in about two days and because it's a BBC show it's taken it's sweet damn time getting season 2 put together. The show's starts up again February 17th in England. Lucky for us, it's being aired on AMC starting February 13th. Suck it, England. For once we get something first! Sorry. Been a bear of a week and I needed a win somewhere, even if it is at the expense of a country I deeply love.

Happy Watching,
Little C
