Movie Crush Monday: Little C and Dear White People

Happy Monday readers, and happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! We have been pretty much nonstop horror movies on the blog since the holidays, but today it felt appropriate to take a break from that because I can follow Kyle Gallner to Dear White People.

Some of you have probably not heard of this movie, it was an independent release and if you blinked you missed the few weeks it was in theaters. It is available to watch on some streaming platforms and I really recommend it. The movie is the story of a bunch of kids in an ivy league college who are all trying to deal with growing up at the same time that they deal with a society and culture that thinks it's post racism.

The main character, Sam (Tessa Thompson) runs a very snarky radio show on campus where she starts to call out the racist behaviors she sees every day. The other students mostly don't react well to this. Her fellow black students are uncomfortable being called out for allowing the other kids to disrespect them, and of course the white kids were typical white kids who like to have the sensitivity of a pile of rocks without ever being reminded that they're insensitive. When a frat party with a blatantly racist  theme is announced on campus the kids are forced to decide what kind of people they want to be and what they value.

The script is brilliant. The issues that writer/director Justin Simien tackles are hard and uncomfortable but the movie manages to surround the serious discussions with heart and humor so the audience feels included in the journey and conversation. The characters are beautifully well rounded, and all struggling with the insecure and unsteady sense of self that comes with trying to figure out how to be an adult.

Seriously guys, I cannot recommend this movie enough.
Happy Watching, and Happy MLK Day.
Little C
