Movie Crush Monday: CT & The Hurt Locker

Well now for something completely different, folks. See! Little C and I watch movies that aren't horror or sci-fi! Last week it was a super political satire and this week we're going to follow Malcolm Barrett from Dear White People over to The Hurt Locker.

Here's the thing. I love The Hurt Locker but it is a tough one. It's a tough movie to watch, it's a tough movie to dissect, it's a tough movie to talk about, to be completely frank. But I think that's why I love it. Every time I watch this movie, it feels like I pull away another layer to it.

First of all, the characters are deeply complex. Jeremy Renner plays Staff Sergeant William James, the head of a bomb disposal team in the US Army in Iraq. In the field, he's reckless, cold. His team is genuinely afraid of him and he repeatedly gets them into dangerous situations. Then you see him with his family and he's sweet, funny, charming. And Jeremy Renner plays him incredibly well. As a viewer you're forced to try and reconcile these various sides of him into one man. It's not easy, but it's a much better film for it.

And of course you can't really talk about this movie without talking about Katheryn Bigelow's win for Best Director at the Academy Awards. Again, there are a lot of sides to that win that need discussion and if you're a regular in these parts you know that Little C and I aren't huge fans of awards shows in general. However, it was an absolutely historic moment and it opened a huge door for female directors. We need all the doors like that we can get, to be honest.

Happy Watching!
