Movie Crush Monday: Little C and Galaxy Quest

It's your lucky day readers! Two posts from two different sisters in one day! Truly fortune has smiled on you! Please look at it this way and not that Comic Con made us slacker writers who didn't post on time!

Readers, I'm dragging ass in a big way this morning. It was four days of near perfect geekness and I would very much like to have stayed there forever, but also it was so overwhelming it made me want to cry several times so it's good that we're out of the nerd verse and back to reality for a bit. All the costumes and cosplay of Comic Con did inspire this weeks post though. It's my favorite pure nerd movie: Galaxy Quest.

The premise of this movie is simple enough, what if the cast of a Star Trek-esque show was brought aboard an actual space ship to help actual aliens? The answer was perfect. Hilarious and touching and the best example of well executed meta that I've ever seen in a film. Kudos to the writer David Howard because the entire script is perfect. It manages to walk a fine line and always ends up being in on the jokes that it makes.

I have a lot of respect for this movie. It would have been so easy to make a film that makes fun of the nerds, and people do that all the time. But to make a film where the geeks are not only the star, but the saviors... This isn't a story where by the end of it, the geeky characters have changed into a more mainstream and acceptable version of themselves. Pretty much the opposite. By the end of the movie the characters who thought they were the cool heros become just as nerdy as everyone else.

The big sell of this movie for anyone should be the cast. Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell are all stunning and perfect. And Tim Allen is really at his peak as a slightly washed up actor who ends up having to captain a real star ship.

So geek out over this movie. It's the perfect way to do that.

Happy Watching!
Little C
