Little C: Let's Pick a New Batgirl Director!!!

Readers, the news broke this week that Joss Whedon has stepped down from the Batgirl film. We are a household that grew up on Buffy, but if I'm being honest this is for the best. Joss admitted that he didn't really have a story to tell for Batgirl and the thing that interested him in the role was "She came up and I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, What's her damage?" If you heard a wooshing sound while you were reading that, it was the sound of Mr. Whedon drastically missing the point. If DC has any damn sense they will realize that Batgirl is the opportunity to take this universe somewhere more fun. Please don't make a Batgirl movie that in anyway resembles Man of Steel... My nerdy heart could not stand it. But since the question of who will step in to helm this movie is up in the air, let me make a few suggestions. The first of which is whoever they hire, it should be a woman.

Lexi Alexander-

She should be the obvious choice. She directs mostly TV these days (including some of the best Supergirl episodes) but she has several film titles under her belt. She's a fun, dynamic director who has a knack for uncluttered fight sequences that forward the plot and don't ever feel stagnant or heavy.

Michelle MacLaren-

Michelle was briefly attached to Wonder Woman so we know that the heads of DC have her number. She also does a lot of television like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. She's mostly done stuff that has a more serious tone, but I would give my left arm and several trucks full of money to watch her explore something with a lighter tone.

Dee Rees-

Dee has impressed the pants off of me since I caught her debut Pariah. She's got this incredibly compassionate eye for story and characters as exemplified by her most recent film Mudbound. Oh boy, was that movie really hard to watch but also just a stunningly well put together film. If DC is going forward with their universe following the Patty Jenkins model then Dee Rees would be a great choice.

Karyn Kusama-

This lady captivated slashed scared the pants off us with The Invitation. She's mostly done TV (Man in the High Castle, Halt and Catch Fire, Billions) and most of her films tend towards horror. So this would be a stylistic change from her recent stuff, but she's got the drive and talent to pull it off. Plus while we had major issues with Aeonflux, they were mostly the changes that the studio made. The heart of that movie was solid and the visuals were drool worthy.

These are not my only choices, but these four would be my top pics if DC was asking me. They're not, because they never seem to care about hurting my feelings, but if they did... I'm just going to assume everyone and their mom knows that Ava DuVernay and Katherine Bigelow should also be on this list, and why.

Happy Nerding,
Little C
