Guys, let's just jump right in this week eh? Because my movie crush this week is one of my favorite movies of all time and there is a lot to talk about here.
I love
Almost Famous. It's one of those movies that I have seen approximately a zillion times and I can never quite resist watching when it's on. I'm (extremely) hit or miss with Cameron Crowe, and partly that's because I don't think he's ever matched this.
The story follows William Miller (who set off my lifelong crush on Patrick Fugit), a high schooler who convinces Rolling Stone that he's a reporter and gets himself assigned to follow a rock band on tour. He's a sheltered kid, and the movie is as much about him growing up and learning about the world as it is about the band and the tour. With all of the fun and drama and insanity that it comes with.
Almost Famous is chock-filled with acto
rs we love doing fantastic work. Kate Hudson plays a groupie girl named Penny Lane, Frances McDormand plays William's straight-laced mother, Zooey Deschanel plays William's older sister (in one of her first film roles). Anna Paquin, Jason Lee, Michael Angarano. And then there is the incomparable Phillip Seymour Hoffman, giving an iconic performance as the Rolling Stone editor that hires William. Even Jimmy Fallon makes an appearance! It's a group of brilliant performers and watching them all on screen is a real joy.
Then there's the music. Oh, guys, the music. Yes, this is a movie about kid on tour with a rock band in the 1970's so that shouldn't really be any shock, but the music in
Almost Famous is outstanding. Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Stooges, Jethro Tull, Joni Mitchell, Yes... The music alone is worth the watch.
Happy Watching!

PS- The latest Cameron Crowe project was a Showtime series called
Roadies that only made it one season. But Little C and I love it dearly in many, many ways. If you have a chance, it is well worth the watch. It's more of a direct successor to Almost Famous than most of Crowe's other work.
