Movie Crush Monday: CT & The Sting

So it's on to another week in Little C and I's Movie Crush Monday game. Last week she told you about one of our favorites, Clue. I spent a lot of time this week looking through Clue's cast, who have all done some incredible movies, before I settled on the incredible Eileen Brennan. Brennan worked consistently from 1966 to 2011 and she always had the opportunity to show off her range.

However, my favorite of her other films has to be 1973's The Sting.

The Sting is a classic for so many reasons. It's one of those movies that lets you think you understand what's going on the entire time, then pulls the rug out from under you at the last minute. Which, for me, is one of the great things about storytelling. As a writer, you shape the way the audience is going to see the world of the story. You can hide things from them, or choose exactly when they get a piece of information. And that gives you so much control over what an audience is thinking.

So without giving you information that would ruin the experience of the movie, The Sting is about a young con man (Robert Redford) who teams up with a once-great con man (Paul Newman) to take down a powerful crime boss in Chicago in the 1930's. As if that pairing wasn't impressive enough, the film also showcases Robert Shaw, James Earl Jones, and Harold Gould.

But really, beyond the incredible writing, the spotlight here is on just how charming Redford and Newman could be, especially when they were acting together. It's just plain incredible to watch the two of them together. And not just because they're possibly the most handsome men that have ever existed.

This movie is amazing. I've watched it so many times and every time I get a little more of it, or I see something new. If you haven't seen it, it's what my favorite professor in college would call a "must see". So put it on your list, folks.

Happy Watching!
