Movie Crush Monday: CT & Love Me If You Dare

Hello there readers! Hoping your week has started off super smoothly. Here at the blog we're keeping things going with Arthouse August and jumping into some French film because I love me some French cinema and it's hard as hell to talk about in the context of our normal Movie Crush Game. So let's do this!

When I first moved to LA, two of my lovely friends showed me a little French film called Love Me If You Dare. They were so excited to share it with me, and it took me about fifteen seconds of screen time before I completely understood their obsession. It's a weird and beautiful and sad and hilarious movie, and one of those movies that gives you a little more every time you watch it.

Love Me If You Dare is about Julien and Sophie, childhood friends that start playing a game of dares, mostly to distract themselves and each other from the painful aspects of their lives. The game ramps up as they grow into teenagers and spirals through their adult lives in ways that they can't really control. Neither wants to admit to the feelings they have for each other, so they cover with increasingly dangerous and outrageous dares. The story is both incredibly dark and super charming, which is a tricky tone to nail.

You can't really talk about this movie without talking about Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet, who play Sophie and Julien. They've known each other for a long time and have actually been in a relationship in real life since 2007. Their chemistry is palpable in every single scene. They're both outstanding actors and watching them play off of each other is so impressive. Their childhood-self actors are just as good (and regulars around these parts know how picky I am about child actors).

It's a tough movie to find these days (come on, streaming services, help a girl out!) but it's so worth the effort.

Happy Watching!
