Movie Crush Monday: Little C and Ink
Welcome back to Movie Crushes readers! For the month of August, we are taking a small break from our normal movie crush game and instead we're doing Arthouse August. You see we have all these indie and foreign films that we love that we would have trouble connecting to and from. So instead we are going to have a month where we celebrate some of our favorite films you may not have heard of.
For my first entry into Arthouse August (Can you tell I thought of the name and I'm a little proud of it?) I want to talk about the movie Ink. It's this amazing little sci-fi movie that was shot in Denver. It's the story of the fight to save a little girl from a monster that's trying to kill her, but it manages to be super visually interesting with a really complex world.
The idea of this world is that there are beings called "Storytellers" that essentially act as guardian angels who watch over children while they sleep. When one of the children in their care is kidnapped by a monster named Ink, they must try and make contact with the girl's dad in the real world to save her before she is lost forever.
The visuals in this movie are stellar. The real world is all shot in the hypersaturated clear white light. The world of the Storytellers is blurry, dreamlike and gold tinted. The world of the movies bad guys (called "Incubus" and straight up there is some techno-punk nightmare shit going on there) has this grimy green tint to everything. It's a really cool way of visually distinguishing one world from another so you're never in doubt of where the characters are.
The other thing I want to really point out is the amount of time that Writer/Director Jamin Winans put in to developing the characters. I have a particular fondness for the character Jacob (Seen in the above picture with the tape over his eyes). He has a scene downtown where he orchestrates a car crash by winding up what looks like an old school organ grinder. The scene is acted and edited to the beats that Jacob is counting out and it's one of my favorite scenes to rewatch. I tried to find a clip of it but wasn't able, so you'll just have to track the movie down and check it out.
