Movie Crush Monday: Little C and Free Fall

Readers welcome back. We are glad to be done with last week which was such a god damn disaster from start to finish and sure this week started out with the sun going away for a bit, but that seems sort of small potatoes compared to the avalanche of crap that hit right up to last night. I will be checking in on Wednesday with a full review of Marvel's The Defenders which I am about halfway through, but in the mean time, let's talk German films.

Specifically I want to talk about a movie that I watched because I was gently stalking the entire cast of Sense8 last year. I say gently because when you're movie stalking a cast of 12 very talented actors, there's no way to really power through that much content. But while I was scrolling through the foreign film section of Netflix I stumbled on Free Fall. And oh boy readers is this film a lot.

The story is that a married man who is struggling through the police academy starts up an affair with another trainee that threatens to derail his life. It's a heavy plot made heavier by the fact that Marc is confronting his sexuality while his wife is getting ready to have their first child. There are heavy themes of homophobia, self identity, broken trust, and consent all through this one, so just be aware before you go in that there are definitely some moments that people might find triggering.

The thing that really struck me about this movie, outside of the really tough subject matter, is how realistically it shows someone who is waking up to the idea that their sexuality is not what they thought later in life. Marc has always assumed he is who everyone has told him he is. A good son, a cop like his father, a good husband and soon to be a good dad. The begining of his change in awareness of his identity comes when one of those is threatened (He's almost forced out of the training academy) and when he stops to really figure out if he wants to be a cop, he also is forced to confront how much of his life he actually chose.

If you're in the mood for a good German film (granted that's a specific mood) check this one out

Happy watching
