CT: Make The Characters Make Sense

In case you missed it, Little C and I are gigantic nerds (but how did you miss that, seriously?).

That means that we are willing to put up with an awful lot in our nerdy movies. Plot premises can be pretty darned unrealistic, and in most cases we prefer our plots unrealistic. Movies about normal people who have drama with their loved ones and families are great. Some of them are awesome. But for the most part we walk out of those movies thinking, "Couldn't that family have used a ghost or two?"

Tonight we went out with our sister to celebrate finishing a draft of our new script and we wanted to see Assassin's Creed. We've heard so-so things about it but I freaking love the games and we all love Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender. So off we went.

And here's the thing. It was pretty bad. There were great things about it. It was beautifully shot and there were fantastic action sequences. The plot premise didn't make a hell of a lot of sense, but again, we're willing to look past that. What I couldn't get past was that not a single one of the characters made a damn bit of sense. I genuinely didn't understand why anyone did anything.

Playing the games gives you a certain bit of additional information, but that's A) no help to the audience members who haven't played the games and B) still not good enough. Especially if the premise is a little crazy, we need characters who make sense and whose choices we can follow if we're going to care about what happens. And that just wasn't the case here. Characters made choices seemingly on a whim, which just made us more confused than ever.

So we had a great time, but it turns out that we want just a little more from our sci-fi action films. We're not expecting cinematic greatness every time, but for the love of goodness at least make the characters make sense.

Happy Watching!
