Movie Crush Monday: CT & Thor

In the years since it's come out, pretty much everything of value has been said about Thor. The nerd have picked that movie apart to celebrate or hate on just about everything. But still, we're just going to have to follow Jeremy Renner from Arrival over to Thor for our Movie Crush Monday this week for one very important reason...

Well, and Loki, but everyone has already loved Loki practically to death and I won't get caught up in one of those nerd girl fights about him, I just won't.

One of the best ideas Marvel has is to put an everyman in with the superhero story to give the audience an onscreen surrogate who isn't part of the big mythic story, but who provides commentary for us about what's happening. Agent Coulson, Michael Pena in Ant Man, Lucky in Iron Man. They're there to be us, how a real world person would feel watching something insane happen in this Super Hero world. They are, honestly, probably one of the biggest differences between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Cinematic Universe, and why the Marvel movies are so much more entertaining to watch.

Darcy Lewis is one of the unsung heroes of the Marvel universe. She. Is. Awesome. She is all of us, in an equal parts awesome and ridiculous situation. Faced with a literal Norse god who's just fallen out of the sky, Darcy does what any college student with a survival instinct would do and tases the crap out of him. And then when she sees that the Norse god looks like Chris Hemsworth, she again does what any of us would do, and offers to give him CPR. She's pissed about the loss of her iPod when their lab gets raided. She immediately takes a pic of Thor for her social media. She struggles in a real way with the pronunciation of Mjolnir.

What she really accomplishes is grounding this completely ridiculous story into a world that we can all see and understand. Because, to be honest, that's all probably what I would do if I suddenly found myself in the middle of a war between gods in New Mexico. And all for an internship credit...

Happy Watching!
