Movie Crush Monday: CT & Legion
I'm The nice thing about Little C's Movie Crush from last week, Hocus Pocus, is that it's cast had been in freaking everything. No joke, there were easily ten different movies I could choose. So I spent the afternoon looking through them until I had my "ah ha!" moment. The wonderful character actor Doug Jones was also in:
So this might not be a super popular choice because of its camp-factor but I absolutely love Legion. It's one of those movies where the world building outweighs any cheesiness it might have. And yeah, there's a ton of cheese. But it's... delicious, I guess? That metaphor got away from me a little bit guys.
Legion's concept is that God has had it with the human race and sent down his angels to wipe everyone out. It takes place at a tiny diner in the middle of nowhere and we follow the dozen or so people in that diner as they try to survive the massacre. That's when Michael shows up (played by the always fantastic Paul Bettany) to fight on the side of the humans. See, there's a pregnant woman in the diner and Michael believes that her baby will save humanity. And he's prepared to kick all manner of ass to make that happen.
One of the interesting things about this movie is that even in what wound up being a B-level horror movie, most of the characters are giving it 1000%. So you actually care deeply about who makes it out of the diner alive. That's kudos to the director, Scott Stewart for having such a tight vision for the movie, and the cast who are absolutely killing it. Even outside of Paul Bettany, who brings his signature intensity to every single thing he does, almost everyone is amazing. Adrianne Palicki is perfectly no-nonsense, and I just wanted to give Lucas Black a hug the entire time. Even if his character is named Jeep inexplicably.
The best part about this Movie Crush is that you get a bonus TV Crush out of the deal! SyFy made a TV show that picks up Legion's story 25 years down the line, where we follow the baby from the film as he becomes a soldier for the last refugees of humanity. The show was called Dominion, and it was a favorite in our household from moment one. We literally cancelled plans to be home to watch it. And when the cancelled it last year, the world briefly stopped turning while we all laid on the floor and cried like that episode of Grey's Anatomy.
Give Legion a chance if you haven't. It's fun and a little scary and one heck of an adventure.
Happy Watching!
