Movie Crush Monday: Little C and A Knights Tale
Hooooooooo boy, readers. Congratulations on making it to another Monday. Anyone else feel like this is a major achievement? Some of you will note that CT did not put up a post on Friday. This was a long and turbulent weekend and as reward for not strangling me to death yesterday, she's been granted a pass on her post. So here I am, another week, another movie recommendation from our extensive back catalog of films that we love. I knew the moment I saw that Christy had chosen Legion where I was going to take it for this week. Because baby Caitlin discovered the wonder that is Paul Bettany in A Knight's Tale.
Guys, it's been a little more than a decade since I discovered this movie and my love for it has never wavered. It's a bizarre mix of period romance, buddy comedy, and sports movie. There's still not been another film that's quite like it, and for pure ingenuity it wins some major bonus points from those of us who love to see a story that takes pure joy in seeing how it can push the boundaries. They took a movie about a young commoner who pretends to be a knight and layered it with great dialogue and side characters until it became a movie that is just as enjoyable the 20th time you watch it.

There are a million reasons to watch this movie (young Heath Ledger, costumes that dreams are made of, a soundtrack that features David Bowie) but Paul Bettany playing Geoffrey Chaucer is by far my favorite part. His version of the famous writer is a compulsive gambler that we meet walking down a road naked because he lost all of his clothes in a bet. Chaucer is the herald to Heath Ledger's character and he has so much fun hyping up the fake Ulrich von Liechtenstein's achievements that he just actively steals scenes away from the main characters. And his weird antagonistic relationship with Alan Tudyk's character is comic gold people!
Happy watching,
Little C
