Movie Crush Monday: CT & Newsies
Guys, I'm so excited for this Movie Crush Post. So. Excited. Let's do this thing.
NEWSIES. The most inspirational dang movie that ever there was. I could walk up to pretty much anyone I grew up with (or pretty much anyone in our generation, period) and sing the opening lines to "Seize The Day" and they would pick it up immediately. Thus is the impact of Newsies on all of our childhoods.
It's the Victory Of The Little Man story of the newspaper boys in New York going up against Joseph Pulitzer in order to get better wages and living conditions. The plot is very loosely based on the true story, but set to music! So it's lively and uplifting in places where the real story is a bit on the depressing side. It's also the story of a very young Christian Bale wanting nothing but a family and singing his little heart out and igniting the love of an entire generation of women.
One of my favorite stories of all time is that once in an interview Christian Bale was asked about this movie and the interviewer called it a flop. Which, technically it was. At the time it was one of the lowest grossing movies in Walt Disney Studios history. But Christian Bale just laughed and told the interviewer, "You say something bad about Newsies and you have an awful lot of people to answer to."
This film is a true cult classic. A flop at the time, a movie the critics panned... and nonetheless, it's a movie that resonated with an audience so strongly that they genuinely could not care less how much money it made. And honestly, I would rather have an entire career made out of these movies than make a million critical darlings that never actually touch anyone.
But also, baby Christian Bale was just. So. Cute.
Happy Watching!
