13th Day of (TV) Christmas: Community

We are more than halfway done with our Christmas TV rewatch, so it is time to get bizarre. Let's watch a show that makes the school choir into a metaphor for pod people! It's time for a Community Christmas!

I've chosen "Regional Holiday Music" which is technically the second Holiday Special for the show because it's my favorite. Mostly because it takes the signature Community style to tackle the type of "We've got to band together to save Christmas" special that we all love to binge this time of year. After the Glee club recruited them the year before (also a great episode) the Study Group vow not to be drafted into their holiday pageant or their obsessive quest to do well at "regionals". Yes the community writers found a way to mock Hallmark specials and Glee in the same episode. It's a Christmas miracle!

One by one the group is drafted, slowly turning each other despite their reservations. Donald Glover gets a delightful song where Troy decides to join the Christmas pageant even though he's a Johvah's Witness because he's going to be a spy to see what Christmas is about! Does that make sense? No! But Troy wants an excuse to join his friend's wacky plan and it doesn't matter how flimsy it is.

Full disclosure, Annie's song where she attempts to seduce Jeff is exceptionally creepy. That's kind of the point but it's definitely an uncomfortable three minutes, so just know that when Allison Brie shows up wearing a shiny Santa outfit you're going to have to strap in. If you get through it you get maniacal Taran Killam monologue!

Happy Musical Watching!
