5th Day of (TV) Christmas: Leverage
It was inevitable, once we announced this challenge, that we would end up here. Leverage was one of our favorite shows and while they actually did two Christmas episodes, The Miracle Job is my favorite. Sure the Ho Ho Ho Job has all the classic Christmas element, Santa asking for help, a con man trying to grift money from hardworking people, Will Wheaton- this episode has a little more heart.
This episode find the crew faking a miracle to help a priest save his church from closing. It turns out Nate had started out in Seminary school, but instead of becoming a priest he dropped out to become an insurance investigator. It's a fascinating bit of information about this character that won't make sense for two more seasons when we finally meet Nate's dad. This show was amazingly patient with handing out little nuggets of background on everyone.
During the con, Eliot and Hardison are sent out to find a group of thugs who beat up a priest. This includes one of my favorite Eliot moments where he grabs a gun right out of a gang-banger's hand and disassembles it while giving a short lecture on weapon efficacy. I will never ever ever ever stop missing my daily dose of Christian Kane badass-ery.
Leverage was one of the all time greats in last lines. The pilot's last line, "Right now you are suffering under an enormous weight. We provide leverage." is something I say in my head way more than is healthy. When I say that this show really shaped a large part of my personality, I mean it on a lot of levels. This episode in particular though, has one of the best final lines of the series. The church that the crew save is the Church of St. Nicholas, who Parker insists on calling Santa in a great running joke. As they leave Parker asks who St. Nicholas is and Sophie responds "Saint Nicholas? He's the Patron Saint of thieves."
Happy Watching
