6th Day of (TV) Christmas: Suburgatory
Well readers, we're almost a week in and boy are we starting to feel the holiday cheer around these parts. Little C and I are getting to the nostalgic point in the holidays, which brings us to today's episode.
Suburgatory is a show that ran for 3 seasons on ABC when Little C and I were just starting to write together. In fact, the first spec episode we ever wrote was for Suburgatory! And it was good, too! We loved this show. It was super weird, and very funny, and starred some of our very favorite actors (Cheryl Hines, Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Ana Gasteyer, and on and on).
However, the high point of the show was almost always Parker Young. We'd never heard of him before this, and we've followed his career consistently ever since. He's hilarious and charming and quite frankly a damned delight in "Krampus". Yes yes yes, there's a whole main plot in this episode about Jane Levy's character going to spend Christmas with her mom in New York and learning that the grass is not always greener. But the real point of this episode is that Ryan Shay (Parker Young) learns that he's adopted and has the most delightful meltdown ever committed to film.
We literally laughed so hard during that scene this time through that we had to pause the episode so we could both go take our inhalers. It was the same the first time, too.
Suburgatory thrived when it was being juuuuuust a little too weird to really succeed on network TV. And this is a perfect example of that. From the very first moment (why would anyone believe the random guy at the photo place when they randomly tell you that you're adopted??), the scene should go off the rails. But the world of the show builds right along with Ryan as he amps up the tantrum until you get to the craziest, funniest result.
Happy Watching!
