The 18th Day of (TV) Christmas: Supernatural
Readers, this is THE ONE. My favorite holiday TV episode EVER! I WILL NOT STOP ABUSING THE CAPS LOCK, I AM TOO EXCITED!!!
It's time for A Very Supernatural Christmas! Does the fact that this episode is the one I've been waiting for say troubling things about my relationship with this time of year? Why yes it does. But there's something about ancient gods who dress up as Santa in order to kidnap people that they then eat that really captures the feeling of shopping at a crowded mall.
This show deals with some really dark themes, and the way that they balance that out is to have these sort of ridiculous, funny episodes. Sam and Dean vs Evil Santa is a situation brimming with comedic potential. There's s truly golden moment where the boys burst in on a drunk older man who plays the mall Santa and to cover for themselves they burst into a broken version of Silent Night and pretend to be carolers.
When the big showdown comes Sam and Dean find out that they're up against a couple of pagan gods who look and act like they just stepped out of a 1950's TV show. The female god chastises Dean for cursing (you know what she says when she feels like swearing? Fudge) and the male god exclaims things like "Sweet Peter on a Popsicle!" as he's mixing up bowls of blood for the sacrificial rite. It's delightful on so many levels.
In true Supernatural form, the episode ends on a big of a downer note. In this season Dean has sold his soul to Hell and both brothers think that it's his last Christmas on earth. They give each other presents bought at a convenience store and wrapped in newspaper. They share some too strong eggnog and watch a game, all while a sense of looming dread hangs over them. The first few seasons of this show had such a specific tone. Every episode had an ominous ending, very similar to the way The X-Files did, but so much more specific. It should have been exhausting, but it managed to stay really fresh partly due to episodes like this.
