20th Day of (TV) Christmas: Legends of Tomorrow

We're in the home stretch now, and I figured it was time to write about a show that has a firm inability and unwillingness to hold back it's crazy. Let's talk about Legends of Tomorrow.

I tried to watch this show when the first season was airing, but if we're being kind it was uneven. If we're being honest it was boring. And then I blew off the next two seasons. And then they announced that Constantine was joining the show this year, and while it was a thinly veiled trick to bring me back, I folded and got caught up over the summer. Turns out, at the beginning of season two the writers said "you know what, screw it!" and went balls to the wall crazy. And suddenly this was the most fun show in the DCTV verse.

This episode (Beebo, God of War) exemplifies everything that's great about the new iteration. The premise for the episode is ridiculous, the action is wacky, and Sara and Ava spend a lot of time making mooney eyes at each other while making snide remarks. But it also has a lot of genuine emotion running through it.

The episode takes place right after the death of Martin Stein. The Legends are all reeling from the loss when they find a younger version of Martin in a village of vikings. He got caught in a time anachronism while he was Hanukkah shopping for his daughter. The vikings have attached to the Beebo doll he was holding (think blue Tickle Me Elmo) and declared it a god. It's changed Christmas into Beebo Day and history has been forever altered.

From there the Legends must face down the season's big bad Damien Darhk to save the timeline (AND CHRISTMAS!) and they must learn to come back together as a team after losing one of their own. It's definitely feel good, but not obnoxiously cheesy. It's the sweet spot that shows like this so frequently miss with Holiday episodes.

Happy Watching
